The Brilliant Promotional Idea of Swamp Soup
I was on a girls trip in 2021 when I walked into a local restaurant after a lazy day at the beach.
Sunburned and ready for food, I noticed a sign that read Free cup of swamp soup with your entree.
Ewwww, what? Swamp soup?
Sure enough, I was handed a cup of soup that looked like it came straight from the swamp! Let me tell you, the idea of swamp soup is a marketing genius!!
Swamp soup at its core is a delicious soup made from broth, greens & andouille sausage. Up north we swap the greens for great northern beans and trade sausage for ham.
Would you order swamp soup just by seeing it on the menu? Probably not.
This restaurant does one better. Why not try it for free? Now they’ve created excitement around a soup with a built in social media hook because how many of your friends have eaten swamp soup? Let’s take it a step further. How many of your friends, or you, are eating soup in the summertime at the beach? The whole idea sounds laughable typing it out. Yet it’s brilliant promotion. The restaurant does nothing and lets its customers post and rave about their swamp soup experience. Just like I am doing in this blog post!
Here’s my question, business owner, what is your swamp soup?
What does your business already do or a product you already have that could have a rebrand?
Bean soup is one thing. Swamp soup is something else. Rebranding an item or service (or soup) is an effective and inexpensive way to create excitement and buzz around your offering. You would never send a press release about the family recipe for bean soup. But you would if you were debuting Swamp Soup. Just think of the publicity it would generate! Imagine the feeling you would get having more customers in your business or buying your product online - What is YOUR swamp soup?
But maybe you just had the thought, you don’t have something you could rebrand.
Okay, maybe you don’t have anything to rebrand, so then what then can we create?
It is a blessing to know your business frontwards, backwards, sideways, and up and down. Sometimes, though, we are too close to the business to see our ‘swamp soup’ story. Brainstorm with your girls the next time you’re out walking, playing pickleball or grabbing coffee.
Let’s find your unique treasure that is a talker and keeps customers coming back for more.
I can’t tell you what I ate for dinner that night in 2021, but I can tell you that swamp soup left a lasting impression. I’ve already been back to that beachy town twice so far this year. Every time I hit up that restaurant with friends. The reaction is always the same, “ewww swamp soup?” they say. “Try it,” I encourage, “it will surprise you!”
