Understanding Marketing In 6 Easy Steps
When we hear and use different marketing terms in business, sometimes we might not be sure if we are using them in the right way.
Such as… Is something publicity, promotion or public relations? Are these three the same?
Here are the top 6 keys to understanding marketing and how you can use them for your business.
We’ll start with advertising.
I love running. I enjoy running marathons. Using that perspective, when a town hosts a marathon, signs go up advertising for runners to sign up. This advertising also tells the public when, where and at what time the race is happening. How does this relate to your business? If you are having an event or launching something you are posting on social telling your community all the specifics. What you're doing, when it's happening and where. That’s advertising.
When runners are out talking about the marathon, that’s promotion.
Whether it’s talking about it on the news, amongst other runners, either way they are promoting the race. Likewise in business, when you are sending emails, talking to other peoples audiences, being interviewed, posting on social, making signs, you too are promoting!
Here is one of my favorites, publicity.
Let’s say the Governor is running in the marathon. Her press person will issue a press release and if the local news does a story, that’s publicity! In business, you too will send a press release about the event, launch, a new product, an anniversary, etcetera. When your local media calls, show’s up, prints or reads your press release over the air, that is publicity!! Positive publicity to be exact.
If promotion and publicity are sisters, then public relations (PR) is their baby sis.
When the Governor crosses the finish line, has the medal and is doing interviews with local media about her marathon experience, that is an example of public relations. For your business, sharing with your community and audience when the media shows up to the business or you score the interview and take pictures, sharing your experience, that is public relations. PR is the ‘feels’ of your business.
When runners convince other runners to sign up, pay the fee and run the marathon, that’s an example of number five, sales.
In business, sharing with your community all the fun they will have attending your event, signing up for your launch and how it will transform them, that’s sales. FOMO can be a huge factor in sales. Don’t be afraid to add a sense of urgency that if they don’t buy, they will be left out.
And finally, if you planned all this in advance either with your team or with me…
that’s marketing!!
